Simple Equations

SSC GD Self-Paced Course

Algebra deals with numbers and variables. A simple equation is an equation that contains one variable and can be solved using basic arithmetic operations.

General Form:

ax + b = c

x = unknown variable

a, b, c = constants

a ≠ 0

1. Solving Simple Equations

Step 1: Move constants to the other side

ax = c - b

Step 2: Divide by coefficient of x

x = (c - b) / a

Example:

Solve 3x + 5 = 20

3x = 20 - 5 = 15

x = 15 ÷ 3 = 5

2. Solving Word Problems

1️⃣

Translate the problem into a simple equation

2️⃣

Identify the unknown as a variable

3️⃣

Solve using basic arithmetic

Example:

If a number increased by 7 gives 15, find the number.

Let the number be x

x + 7 = 15

x = 15 - 7 = 8

3. More Examples

Example 1:

Solve 4x - 8 = 16

4x = 16 + 8 = 24

x = 24 ÷ 4 = 6

Example 2:

Solve 2x + 10 = 30

2x = 30 - 10 = 20

x = 20 ÷ 2 = 10

SSC GD Tip: Mastering simple equations is fundamental for solving more complex algebra problems. Remember the basic steps: isolate the variable by moving constants to the other side, then divide by the coefficient. Practice translating word problems into mathematical equations - this skill is crucial for the exam. Regular practice with previous year SSC GD questions will build your speed and accuracy. Pay special attention to problems involving ages, numbers, and basic arithmetic operations as they frequently appear in simple equation format.
