1️⃣ Introduction

This chapter is one of the most important topics in SSC MTS, SSC GD, Delhi Police, Railway & all competitive exams.

The relationship between Time, Speed, and Distance is the foundation of all problems.

2️⃣ Basic Formulae

✔ Formula 1: Speed

Speed = Distance / Time

✔ Formula 2: Distance

Distance = Speed × Time

✔ Formula 3: Time

Time = Distance / Speed

3️⃣ Unit Conversions

✔ km/hr to m/s

1 km/hr = 5/18 m/s

✔ m/s to km/hr

1 m/s = 18/5 km/hr

4️⃣ Relative Speed

✔ When moving in same direction

Relative speed = Difference of speeds

✔ When moving in opposite direction

Relative speed = Sum of speeds

5️⃣ Average Speed

Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time

6️⃣ Key Points

If speed increases → time decreases

If speed decreases → time increases

If speed × time = constant → distance fixed

Distance fixed → speed ∝ 1/time

Q1. A train covers 120 km in 2 hours. What is its speed?

View Answer

Speed = 120/2 = 60 km/hr

Q2. A car moves at 80 km/hr. How much distance covered in 3 hours?

View Answer

Distance = 80 × 3 = 240 km

Q3. A man walks 20 km at 5 km/hr. Time taken?

View Answer

Time = 20/5 = 4 hours

Q4. Convert 54 km/hr to m/s.

View Answer

54 × 5/18 = 15 m/s

Q5. Convert 20 m/s to km/hr.

View Answer

20 × 18/5 = 72 km/hr

Q6. Two cars moving in same direction at 70 km/hr & 50 km/hr. Relative speed?

View Answer

= 70 − 50 = 20 km/hr

Q7. Two trains moving in opposite directions 40 km/hr & 30 km/hr. Relative speed?

View Answer

= 40 + 30 = 70 km/hr

Q8. A boy runs 10 km at 5 km/hr and returns at 10 km/hr. Avg speed?

View Answer

Total distance = 20 km, Time = 10/5 + 10/10 = 2 + 1 = 3, Avg speed = 20/3 = 6.67 km/hr

Q9. A car travels 150 km in 3 hours. Speed?

View Answer

Speed = 150/3 = 50 km/hr

Q10. Speed = 36 km/hr. Convert to m/s.

View Answer

36 × 5/18 = 10 m/s

Q11. A bus travels at 45 km/hr for 4 hours. Distance?

View Answer

= 45 × 4 = 180 km

Q12. A person walks 6 km in 1 hour. Speed?

View Answer

= 6 km/hr

Q13. A train moves at 90 km/hr. Time for 270 km?

View Answer

= 270/90 = 3 hours

Q14. Two cars opposite directions: 55 km/hr & 45 km/hr. Relative speed?

View Answer

= 55 + 45 = 100 km/hr

Q15. A cycle covers 15 km at 10 km/hr. Time?

View Answer

= 15/10 = 1.5 hours

✅ SSC GD Exam Strategy

🟢 Memorize basic speed-distance-time formulas

🟢 Practice unit conversions (km/hr ↔ m/s) quickly

🟢 Master relative speed concepts for same/opposite directions

🟢 Learn to calculate average speed for different scenarios

🟢 Time yourself - aim for 30-45 seconds per TSD question

You've completed Time, Speed & Distance Concepts!

SSC GD Tip: Time, Speed & Distance is a fundamental topic that appears in almost every competitive exam. Focus on mastering the basic formulas and unit conversions first. Remember that relative speed problems require careful attention to direction. Practice average speed calculations for different scenarios, especially when speeds vary. Regular practice with previous year SSC GD questions will build your speed and accuracy in solving TSD problems efficiently.
