SSC GD Self-Paced Course
1. What is Discount?
Discount is the reduction given on the Marked Price (MP) of an article.
Discount = MP - SP
Shops offer discounts to attract customers.
2. Important Terms
✔ Marked Price (MP)
The price printed on an item (before discount).
✔ Discount (D)
The amount reduced from MP.
✔ Selling Price (SP)
Actual price at which goods are sold.
SP = MP - Discount
✔ Discount Percent (D%)
Discount% = (Discount / MP) × 100
3. Formulas You Must Remember
✔ To find Discount:
Discount = MP - SP
✔ To find SP after discount:
SP = MP × (1 - D/100)
✔ To find MP when SP is given:
MP = (SP × 100) / (100 - D)
✔ Successive Discounts Formula
If two discounts of a% and b% are given:
Net Discount% = a + b - (a×b)/100
4. Examples
Example 1:
MP = 800, Discount = 10%
SP = 800 × (1 − 0.10) = ₹720
Example 2:
Two discounts 20% and 10%:
Net discount = 20 + 10 − (20×10)/100 = 28%
