Introduction

Parts of Speech are the basic building blocks of English grammar. SSC GD asks direct, simple questions mostly related to identifying parts of speech, spotting errors, and choosing the correct word in a sentence.

Exam Tip: Once this topic is clear, error detection and sentence correction become super easy.

Noun

Meaning

A noun is the name of a person, place, thing, animal, or idea.

Examples: Ram, Delhi, Book, Honesty, Dog

Exam Tip: If you can put a/an/the or many before a word — it's often a noun.

Pronoun

Meaning

A pronoun is used in place of a noun.

Examples: He, She, It, They, You, Them, Ours

Common SSC Mistake: "Everyone should do their work."
Correct: Everyone should do his/her work.

Verb

A verb shows action or state of being.

Examples: Run, Eat, Play, Is, Are, Have

Examples: Beautiful girl, Tall building, Five apples

Question Trick: Adjectives answer — which? what kind? how many?

Meaning

Adverbs describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

Examples: He runs quickly. Very tall. Speaks slowly.

Note: Common adverbs end with -ly, but not always.

Preposition

Meaning

Shows relationship between noun/pronoun and another word.

Examples: in, on, at, under, behind, between, from, to, with

Exam Favourite: "In the morning", "At night", "On Monday"

Conjunctions join words, phrases, or sentences.

Examples: and, but, or, because, although
