Vijayanagara Empire (1336–1646)

Founded by

  • Harihara I and Bukka Raya I in 1336
  • Founded on the banks of Tungabhadra River
  • Capital: Hampi (Karnataka)

Important Rulers

Krishnadeva Raya (1509–1529) – Tuluva Dynasty

  • Greatest ruler of Vijayanagara Empire.
  • Wrote "Amuktamalyada" in Telugu.
  • Defeated Bahmani rulers and Gajapatis of Odisha.
  • Promoted art, literature, temple architecture.
  • Constructed Vittalaswamy and Hazara Rama temples.

Battle of Talikota (1565)

  • Fought between Vijayanagara and a confederacy of Deccan Sultanates.
  • Vijayanagara defeated → empire weakened severely.

Features

  • Administration was centralized.
  • Promoted Hindu culture.
  • Built many temples, bazaars, irrigation systems.
  • Language: Telugu, Kannada, Sanskrit.

Bahmani Kingdom (1347–1527)

  • Ala-ud-Din Hasan Bahman Shah in 1347
  • Capital: Initially Gulbarga, later Bidar

Important Sultans

Mahmud Gawan (Prime Minister)

  • Famous vizier under Bahmani rule.
  • Reformed revenue system, opened madrasas (schools).
  • Promoted education and trade.
  • Executed falsely → led to decline of the kingdom.

Conflicts

  • Constant wars with Vijayanagara Empire over Raichur Doab (land between Krishna & Tungabhadra rivers).
  • Kingdom later split into 5 Deccan Sultanates:
    • Bijapur
    • Golconda
    • Ahmadnagar
    • Bidar
    • Berar
